Preparing for the Next Adventure - Iowa State
Living On-Campus
On-campus living truly enhances a student's college experience. Convenience, lasting friendships and an environment committed to fostering education are just a few of the benefits. The Department of Residence provides a variety of neighborhoods to fit the needs of students ranging from suite-style residence halls to family-student apartments. Dining service for residence hall students is provided by ISU Dining. Residential dining centers are located in each residence hall neighborhood.
Going Greek
Since 1875, Greek chapters have played an active role on the Iowa State campus. Joining a fraternity or sorority provides a wealth of friendship, leadership, philanthropy, and scholarship opportunities.
Getting Involved
Encourage your student to get involved in one (or more) of Iowa State's nearly 700 student clubs and organizations. Students who get involved are more likely to make friends who share the same interests as them, feel connected to the campus and develop organizational skills, and leadership qualities.
Safety on Campus
At Iowa State University, student safety is our highest priority. The university's police department, the only nationally accredited college law enforcement agency in Iowa and one of the few in the United States, provides police protection 24 hours a day. Their services also include a safety escort service, emergency telephones throughout campus, a help van for assistance with car problems, and educational programming.
Access to Iowa State's residence halls is controlled by an electronic key card system and all of the primary entrances and elevators have security cameras. Iowa State also has an emergency alert system that will quickly notify students by phone, text message, and e-mail in the event of a campus emergency.
All colleges and universities are required by law to provide statistical information concerning crimes on and around their campuses.
Healthcare
The Thielen Student Health Center provides medical services and prevention programs for students and their spouses/domestic partners. The health clinic offers routine medical and injury care, physical examinations, x-ray and laboratory services, women's health and prenatal services, travel immunizations, routine vaccinations, an allergy clinic, physical therapy, and psychiatric services, as well as a full-service pharmacy.
Transportation
Iowa State is a pedestrian friendly campus. Many students walk, bike or ride CyRide, which provides bus service on campus and to every part of the Ames community. There is no fee to ride for Iowa State students who present their current ISUCard.
Freshman students are allowed to bring vehicles to campus, but it is not necessary. All students who bring a car to Iowa State are required to register their vehicles with the Department of Public Safety - Parking Division. There is a charge for parking permits for students living in the residence halls, and there is a designated student parking lot for each residence hall complex. Most students end up parking their vehicles at Jack Trice Stadium.
