Cyclone Aides

Cyclone Aides are undergraduate student leaders who facilitate Orientation and Destination Iowa State throughout the year. They provide new students with an introduction to campus and its resources, provide campus and residence hall tours, prepare students for academic advising appointments, serve on panels, and share information about Iowa State with new students and their family members.

Cyclone Aides coordinate the Destination Iowa State program by helping with the selection and supervision of Team Leaders, planning events and implementing the event. Additionally, Cyclone Aides assist with campus visits and student recruitment throughout the year. Cyclone Aides are an integral part of the Office of New Student Programs.

Requirements:

Applicant may not be on temporary enrollment or academic or conduct probation and must be enrolled as a full time student at Iowa State during spring semester 2010.

Selection Criteria:

  • Student must demonstrate an interest in working with new students from a variety of backgrounds, a willingness to accept responsibility, and total commitment to the students and program objectives
  • Selected on the basis of previous work experiences, knowledge of Iowa State, leadership, scholarship, enthusiasm, and creativity
  • Should possess a warm and friendly manner, sincerity, patience, versatility, maturity of judgment, punctuality, and a willingness to follow a prescribed standard of excellence
  • Must be willing to commit to Spring training, Orientation, Destination Iowa State and all dates listed below

Selection will be based on two rounds of interviews. The first round will consist of group interviews with the candidate's respective college. Candidates will interview on either Wednesday, October 21 or Sunday, October 25, 2009. Candidates that advance from round one will participate in second round interviews during the week of November 13-20, 2009. These will consist of one-on-one meetings with several members of the New Student Programs staff.

Compensation:

Compensation is valued at an estimated $5,800 which includes a $3,000 stipend paid in installments between January 2010 and January 2011, summer housing, uniform apparel, and meal package including Dining Dollars.

Time Commitment for 2010 Cyclone Aides

  • Cyclone Aide Social the afternoon of Sunday, January 10, 2010
  • Training two mornings a week beginning January 12, 2010 through April 29, 2010 (Every Tuesday and Thursday; 8:00 - 9:20 a.m.)
  • One day retreat on Saturday, February 6, 2010 from 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
  • Facilitate Team Leader Interviews two of the following dates: February 17 or 18, 2010 from 3:00-6:00 p.m.; February 22 or 23, 2010 from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m.
  • Overnight retreat on March 5-6, 2010
  • One day retreat Sunday, March 28, 2010 12:00 - 5:30 p.m.
  • 2-3 hours at Orientation during spring semester 2010 (April 2,9,12) based on class schedule
  • Intensive Training Week (May 24-28, 2010)
  • Summer Orientation (June 1, 2010 - July 2, 2010; full-time, hours vary 7:00 a.m. - midnight)
  • Weekly office hours during summer 2010 to assist with planning of Destination Iowa State
  • Campus Visits, recruitment and orientation initiatives throughout summer 2010
  • One day retreat on Tuesday, August 3, 2010
  • Coordinate the Destination Iowa State program August 15-22, 2010
  • 2-3 hours at Orientation during fall semester 2010 (August 19, November 1, and November 12) based on class schedule
  • January Orientation and Destination Iowa State on January 7, 2011
