Cyclone Aides

Cyclone Aides are undergraduate student leaders who facilitate Orientation and Destination Iowa State throughout the year. This premier student leadership position contributes to the orientation program by providing new students with an introduction to campus and its resources, providing campus and residence hall tours, preparing students for academic success, serving on informational panels, and sharing information about Iowa State with new students and their family members.

Cyclone Aides coordinate the Destination Iowa State program by helping with the selection and supervision of Team Leaders, planning events and implementing the program.

Additionally, Cyclone Aides assist with campus visits and student recruitment throughout the year. Cyclone Aides are an integral part of the Office of New Student Programs and an important part of the new student experience.

Requirements:

Applicant may not be on temporary enrollment or academic or conduct probation and must be enrolled as a full time student at Iowa State at the time of application and during spring semester 2012.

Selection Criteria:

  • Demonstrate an interest in serving new students and their families from a variety of backgrounds, a willingness to accept responsibility, and total commitment to students and program objectives
  • Selected on the basis of previous work experiences, knowledge of Iowa State, leadership, scholarship, enthusiasm, and creativity
  • Should possess a warm and friendly manner, sincerity, patience, flexibility, maturity of judgment, punctuality, and a willingness to follow a prescribed standard of excellence
  • Must be willing to commit to enroll in spring semester Leadership Seminar course and engage in spring semester preparation, Orientation, Destination Iowa State, and all dates listed below
  • Students may not enroll in academic coursework or have another job during summer Orientation
  • Students must have a 2.2 cumulative grade point average at the time of application and maintain a 2.0 grade point average throughout employment. First year students will be evaluated based on their first semester grades once established.

Selection will be based on two rounds of interviews. The first round will consist of group interviews with the candidate's respective college. Candidates will interview on either Sunday, October 23 or Wednesday, October 26, 2011. Candidates that advance from round one will participate in second round interviews during the week of November 10-17, 2011. These individual interviews are conducted with members of the New Student Programs staff.

Compensation:

Compensation is valued at an estimated $5,800 which includes hourly compensation estimated at $3,000 paid in installments between May 2012 and January 2013, summer housing, uniform apparel, and meal package including Dining Dollars.

Time Commitment for 2012 Cyclone Aides

  • Cyclone Aide Social the afternoon of Sunday, January 8, 2012
  • Leadership Seminar two mornings a week beginning January 10, 2012 through April 26, 2012 (Every Tuesday and Thursday; 8:00 - 9:20 a.m.)
  • One day retreat on Saturday, February 4, 2012 from 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
  • Facilitate Team Leader Interviews two of the following dates: February 15 or 16, 2012 from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m.; February 20 or 21, 2012 from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m.
  • Overnight retreat on March 2-3, 2012
  • One day retreat Sunday, March 25, 2012 from 12:00 - 5:30 p.m.
  • 2-3 hours at Orientation during spring semester 2012 (April 6,13,16) based on class schedule
  • Intensive Training Week (May 21-25, 2012; full time, hours vary 7:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.)
  • Summer Orientation (May 29, 2012 - June 29, 2012; full-time, hours vary 7:00 a.m. - midnight)
  • 4 weekly office hours starting July 12 - August 10, 2012 to assist with planning of Destination Iowa State and a weekly staff meeting on Thursdays from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m.
  • Campus Visits, recruitment and orientation initiatives throughout summer 2012
  • One day retreat on Tuesday, July 31, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
  • Coordinate the Destination Iowa State program (August 12-19, 2012; full-time, hours vary 7:00 a.m. - midnight)
  • Facilitate Cyclone Aide 2013 Interviews October 14 and 17, 2012 (hours vary)
  • 2-3 hours at Orientation during fall semester 2012 (August 19, November 2, and November 12) based on class schedule
  • January Orientation and Destination Iowa State on January 11, 2013
