Cyclone Aides

New Student Programs (Orientation/Destination Iowa State) assists new students through the transition necessary for a successful college transition experience.

Cyclone Aides are undergraduate student leaders who facilitate new student programs throughout the year. They provide new students with an introduction to campus and its resources, provide campus and residence hall tours, prepare students for academic advising appointments, serve on panels, and share information about Iowa State with new students and their family members.

Cyclone Aides also coordinate the Destination Iowa State program and assist with campus visits and student recruitment throughout the year.

Requirements:

Applicant may not be on temporary enrollment or academic or conduct probation and must be enrolled as a full time student at Iowa State during spring semester 2008.

Selection Criteria:

  • Student must demonstrate an interest in working with new students from a variety of backgrounds (skills in human relations helpful), a willingness to accept responsibility, and total commitment to the students and program objectives
  • Selected on the basis of previous work experiences, knowledge of Iowa State, leadership, scholarship, enthusiasm, and creativity
  • Should possess a warm and friendly manner, sincerity, patience, versatility, maturity of judgment, punctuality, and a willingness to follow a prescribed standard
  • Must be willing to commit the entire 2008 summer to assisting with the successful implementation and execution of Summer Orientation and Destination Iowa State.

Selection will be based on two rounds of interviews. The first round will consist of group interviews. Interviews will be held on Sunday, November 4, 2007. Candidates that advance from round one will participate in second round interviews during the week of November 9-16, 2007. These will consist of one-on-one meetings with several members of the university community.

Compensation:

Compensation is valued at an estimated $4,600 which includes a $2,500 stipend paid in installments during spring and summer 2008, summer housing, uniform apparel, and Dining Dollars.

Time Commitment for 2008 Cyclone Aides

  • Cyclone Aide Social the afternoon of Sunday, January 13, 2008.
  • Training two mornings a week during spring semester beginning January 15, 2008 through May 2008 (currently set for every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 8-9:20 a.m.)
  • One day retreat on Saturday, February 16, 2008.
  • Facilitate Team Leader Interviews one of the following dates: February 25, 26 or 27, 2008.
  • One day retreat on Sunday, March 9, 2008.
  • Overnight retreat March 28-29, 2008.
  • Orientation during spring semester (April 4, 2008; April 8, 2008; April 16, 2008.)
  • Intensive Training Week (May 21-29, 2008.)
  • Summer Orientation (May 30, 2008 - June 30, 2008; full-time, hours vary 7:00 a.m. - midnight.)
  • Weekly office hours during summer 2008 to assist with planning of Destination Iowa State.
  • Campus Visits and recruitment initiatives throughout July 2008 as needed (July orientation and retreat dates to be decided.)
  • One day retreat on Thursday, July 31, 2008
  • Coordinate the Destination Iowa State programs August 17-24, 2008 and January 9, 2009.
  • Orientation during fall semester (August 21, 2008; October 27, 2008; November 14, 2008.)
  • January Orientation on January 9, 2009.
