Graduate Applicants

Apply for Admission

We are delighted you are considering pursuing graduate studies at Iowa State University. Before you begin working on your application, be sure to carefully read the application instructions. Note: there are different instructions for U.S. applicants than for international applicants, so make sure you select the correct link. Included in this section is information on the application fee, multiple applications, academic records and test score requirements, and information on how to submit electronic letters of reference.

Program Information Requirements

Our various academic programs have different deadlines and supplemental information requirements, so please review the important program specific instructions located in program requirements. Since the Iowa State application process requires you to send some materials to the admissions office and some to the department to which you're applying, this section includes detailed mailing instructions as well.

Letters of Recommendation

The university requires three letters of recommendation be submitted. Iowa State offers an online submission system for letters of recommendation which is managed by the applicant. When you indicate on your application that a recommender will submit an online letter, an e-mail message is generated and sent to them with instructions.

If your recommender prefers to send the letter of recommendation by mail, you may download the Iowa State letter of recommendation form and mail it to the graduate program to which you have applied. Postal and email addresses for the graduate programs are available on the program requirements website.

International Applicants

International applicants who will need an F-1 student visa or J-1 exchange visitor visa (Forms I-20 or DS-2019) should also complete the International Graduate Financial Statement, print it and mail it to the Office of Admissions with the necessary bank documents.
