College Fairs

A college fair is an event at which colleges and universities display information to provide students and parents with an opportunity to learn about a variety of schools in one location at one time. Fairs are typically sponsored by high schools, school boards, or professional counseling associations. Students will stop by Iowa State's assigned table to meet face to face with someone who can answer questions and give them further information.

College Fairs

Iowa State is invited to participate in college fairs throughout the year. Invitations are typically mailed to the Office of Admissions. However, you may become aware of other fairs being held in your area. It is important that you call us with the names and dates of fairs you feel Iowa State should attend. Iowa State will solicit an invitation by contacting the coordinator of the fair.

Expectations

As a college fair representative you are Iowa State University. Your professionalism, friendliness, and accuracy reflect upon the university. We expect you to follow a simple set of rules as an ambassador:

• Arrive at the fair with enough time to set up. Clean up your area when the fair is over.
• Smile and say hello, but stay behind your table!
• Ask questions: "Do you know anyone from Iowa State? What do you want to study?"
• Give honest answers and provide the Web site address and toll free number as resources.
• Encourage completion of student information cards.
• Champion Iowa State, but refrain from comparing Iowa State to other institutions.
• Complete a fair evaluation. Return it with student information cards and the banner to Iowa State.
• Review the Statement of Principles of Good Practice in the AAC Handbook.

Preparation

We will invite ambassadors to represent Iowa State at college fairs in their respective areas. If the date, time, and location are acceptable, Iowa State will reserve your place. We will provide you with directions to the event and other details. We ask that you dress professionally and appropriately in business attire, but we do not expect you to wear a suit. A box of supplies will be shipped to you. The materials that we will provide are listed below. Remember, you are uniquely qualified to discuss the benefits of an Iowa State University education with prospective students and their parents at college fairs. Thank you!

Evaluation

Following the fair, we ask you to complete an evaluation.
